John 21:3“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.”

After Jesus had risen from the dead and even appeared to His disciples, Simon Peter and six others returned to fishing. At first glance, we see a disappointed Peter. This is the same man who once walked away from a miraculous catch, left everything behind, and followed Jesus wholeheartedly. But now, he returns to what he once knew—perhaps trying to secure his livelihood, perhaps worrying about tomorrow. Maybe Peter was thinking, “This is not how I expected the story to unfold. This can’t be it. This can’t be the end.”

And if we are honest, many of us have stood in that same place. We had dreams. We stepped out in faith. We made decisions believing God was leading us. Yet now, we find ourselves disappointed, uncertain, and asking, “What next?” This is not the life we imagined—for our family, our career, our ministry, or our future. Everything may feel like it has turned upside down, and we see no clear way forward.

But here is the truth: this was not the end for Peter—and it is not the end for you!

Peter’s return to fishing was not his final chapter. God was not finished with him. What looked like a step backward was actually preparation for a powerful new beginning. Just a short time later, in the book of Acts, we see a transformed Peter—filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly stepping into his calling.

Let’s look at how the Holy Spirit changed Peter:

  1. Confidence

In Acts 2:29, Peter declares, “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently…”

This is striking because, not long before, the disciples were hiding in fear:

John 20: 19 “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”.”

Once fearful and hiding, now Peter speaks with boldness and confidence.

When Peter received the Holy Spirit, he received the courage to proclaim the gospel of Jesus without fear. In the same way, the Holy Spirit will give you the confidence to face tomorrow.

You cannot do this on your own—you need the Holy Spirit.

  1. Authority in His Words

Acts 2: 36–37 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

In John 21, Peter’s decision influenced six others to step away from ministry, even if temporarily. But now, filled with the Holy Spirit, he speaks with authority—and thousands respond.

If you have the desire to share the Word of God but lack confidence, remember this promise:

Luke 21:15 “for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!”

The Holy Spirit gives both the words and the authority.

  1. Authority in His Actions

In Acts 3, Peter heals a lame beggar. But notice his response:

When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?

These are the same disciples who were once amazed when Jesus calmed the storm in Mark 4: 37-41A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

There was a time when fear defined them. But now, they begin to walk in faith and authority.

When It Feels Like You’re Drowning

In the storm, the disciples asked, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

In moments of disappointment, we may ask the same question: “Does Jesus not care about me?”

But think about this—who told them they were going to drown?Who told you that He does not care for you? Sometimes, past failures and experiences fill our minds with fear. The enemy uses those memories to bring doubt, discouragement, and hopelessness.

But remind yourself of this truth:

If Jesus is in your boat, your boat will not drown. If you have given Him authority over your life, this storm will not destroy you. If Jesus is the captain of your life, He cares for you—and He will not let you drown.

Build your faith in times of trouble!

Be assured of this:

Psalms 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

The storm helped the disciples know Jesus more deeply. They asked, “Who is this?” Even after walking with Him, they were still discovering who He truly was.

In the same way, the trials you face today will help you understand God’s love and care more deeply.

This Is Not Your End

Let me come back to the central thought: you may be thinking today, “This can’t be it.”

And you’re right—this is not your end.

The God who gave dreams to Joseph fulfilled those dreams. When Joseph was thrown into the pit, he could have doubted. When he was placed in prison, he could have questioned God.

But Joseph remained confident in the One who gave him the dreams. And because of that, he found favor with God in every situation.

Conclusion

If you feel like you have reached the end and are filled with disappointment:

  • Be filled with the Holy Spirit

  • The Holy Spirit will give you confidence to face tomorrow

  • The Holy Spirit will give you authority in your words and actions

  • The Holy Spirit will help you silence the negative thoughts and past failures that try to overwhelm your mind

Psalms 55: 22 “Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.”

When life feels too difficult to handle, give your burdens to Him.

He will take care of you. He will not let you fall. And this is not the end of your story!
